The Knights of St. Andrew invites everyone to celebrate St. Andrew's Day with a Brunch at the Brae Loch Inn in Cazenovia, NY on Sunday, November 20th at 11:00 AM! Reservations are due no later than October 30th, 2022. Congratulations! Your Valley has achieved the distinction of a Valley of Excellence for the year 2021-2022. I’m sure you’re as proud of that achievement as we are for you and your fellow members. This is a designation not easily attained. When this program launched in June 2020, right in the midst of a global pandemic, we could not foresee the impact it would have on our Brotherhood, or the ongoing external challenges we would continue to face. Still, Valley leaders toiled tirelessly in their quarries, seeking new ways to strengthen the member experience. From leveraging technology to innovation, Valley leaders held steadfast in providing the support our members needed more than ever. The Valley of Excellence program is based on four pillars: Membership, Service & Philanthropy, Leadership Development, and Operations. Within each section are various areas of focus and achievement benchmarks. The biggest pillar among these four is Membership, specifically Recruitment, Retention, and Restoration. Without positive results in this area, a Valley cannot prosper. To be named a Valley of Excellence, a Valley must achieve a 90% rating in the areas above. It is my privilege and honor to write this letter and let you know the Valley of Syracuse, which you are a member, achieved or exceeded this percentage. Your Valley will be recognized in the Fall 2022 edition of The Northern Light magazine. Your collective labors of love have not gone unnoticed, my Brothers. You can be proud of the work that has been done and optimistic for the future of the Scottish Rite, NMJ. One of the programs that allowed us to keep moving forward is the Thursday Night at the Rite. If not for this program Scottish Rite in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction would have suffered greatly. I am grateful that this program allowed us to bring Master Masons into Scottish Rite Freemasonry. I want to thank the Body Heads and our membership for their efforts to help our Valley succeed in qualifying for the Valley of Excellence Award this Year. Let’s keep up the good work! Many thanks to our Valley Secretary, Jim Swan and his office staff, Sharon Fox and Sharon Swan for all the hard work they do for our Valley to keep it running so smoothly these many years. Twice we had to postpone our Reunion Degree Day due to conflicts and COVID. Hopefully it will go off without a hitch the third time. Barrett, 32° Most Wise Master Council Greetings Princes. As this will be my last article as your Sovereign Prince I just want to remind you all of several important things. First, Masonry does not stop during the summer even though we won’t be meeting in person, keep thinking about and living our values and always keep in mind that new ideas are always welcome and encouraged. Also, do not forget that one of our main principles is charity- it is strongly encouraged that you give whatever you can to our charities. The Valley of Syracuse has always been known as a generous Valley in this regard. Education is fundamental to truly understanding our craft so make use of the Livingston Library programs, the HGA courses, come to and participate in the degrees. Another way to learn even more is to go to other Valleys, it is something I enjoy doing and have truly enjoyed the experiences. Carpooling is a great way to expand friendships or form new ones. There is so much more that I could talk about but the fact is that all of you are The Valley of Syracuse, take pride in that-I do. On a last note, please support all of the incoming body heads in their endeavors and stay Scottish Rite strong. The last three years have been an amazing journey for me in the Lodge of Perfection. We’ve hosted several events, attended many social outings, and conferred several LOP Degrees along with helping the other Bodies with the same, all marked with the opportunity to serve you the membership. What a true honor it has been to be in your service! The cold wet spring weather of Central N.Y. finally appears to be behind us. In addition to Covid related problems which are not going to go away, the deer ticks are unusually heavy this spring, causing the concern of Lyme disease. ( the name comes from Lyme, Connecticut, where it was discovered) This is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected tick. Be sure and check your dog, cat, and yourself, when you come inside. I use a fine tooth comb to remove them from our cat. If you are experiencing flu like symptoms, and, or have a target shaped rash, make sure you have it evaluated. Treatment with antibiotics is usually effective when detected early. One closing remark about Covid….Dianne and I have both received our 2nd booster of Moderna and continue to mask up when out and about. I realize these are personal decisions. Dick Freeman – 315-837-4962 freeman1574@frontier.com Welcome to My World Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY As I write this, we are one month from our Recognition Ceremony. Year 18 is soon to be in the books. We had 17 children attending this year and 2 Practitioner 1 Scholars and 1 Practitioner 2 Scholar. We will be honoring the Scholars and eight children who have completed their time at the Center and will be moving to independent learning. We will also recognize the nine children who plan to return in the fall for their second year with us. We are happy to report that we have four new Practitioner 1 Scholars who will receive their training for Certification in the upcoming year. It looks to be another busy year with close to 20 children attending the Center. Some of our certified tutors will continue training as Trainers, Supervisors and Therapists so the learning continues at all levels. The last three years have seen us continue to face, meet, and overcome many challenges that we could never have envisioned. The fact that you are steadfast in your support has allowed us to keep moving forward in the best ways possible. We pray that the upcoming year will allow us to return to a more normal setting and that we can continue to bring you positive reports about what is going on at the Center. A brief update on Lucas as he continues to make consistent progress and show involvement in each lesson. He will continue with us next fall and we are confident that he will benefit more and more from his time here. We have just placed his younger sister on our waitlist and will look forward to seeing here sometime in the next two years. I continue to report, and it remains the same, that we have a two year wait list for children who need/want our services. As you read this, we will be preparing for our summer hiatus. We have found the desire and feasibility of a summer program are not there. Though it would be optimum for the children the lack of interest and consistent attendance for the last few summers that we had the extended program did not make them cost or time effective. Perhaps this will change back to a flourishing program in the future, but it is not to be at this time. The Center will be closed for services from June 14th to September 19th . Gineal and I will be in and our throughout the summer to deal with phone and mail during that time and you can always email. Together, we wish to encourage all of our members, wherever so disbursed and no matter where your Scottish Rite roots are planted, to continually enhance your personal Masonic journey by seeking Masonic light from wherever it shines. Therefore, we strongly promote and encourage the sharing of Masonic Fellowship between our Valleys and their members. While there are some differences, much between our jurisdictions is the same. It mentions the Passover and Sacrament of Holy Communion but,it is neither. It commemorates both festivals as a memorial service, honoring our Brethren who have passed to their eternal reward. Their names are read by the Secretary and a candle is extinguished to honor all our Brethren. During the Mystic Banquet the officers are seated around a table in the shape of a cross. Then bread and wine are served and eaten. The true purpose is to celebrate our service to God and remember our late Brethren. Two other sections are the Extinguishing the Lights where the officers read negative statements and candles are extinguished. Then the section of Relighting of the LIGHTS where officers read positive statements. Then the candles are relit to bring hope and love. This festival is scheduled on April 9, 2022 at 2:30P.M. with a luncheon to follow. Please come and bring a friend . It is a beautiful and rewarding experience. On APRIL 30, 2022 AT 9:00 am. we will be doing the following degrees with Utica Valley at their temple: 4th, 6th, 21st and then a lunch break. After lunch, the 22nd and 32 degrees will be conferred. As a reminder, on April 30th the Valleys of Syracuse and Utica will be presenting several degrees at the Valley of Utica. There will be a mix of live and video degrees and a lunch served. This event has garnered a lot of interest from Scottish Riters from all over and should be a fun day. The Valley is looking for new members to add to our upcoming classes so if you know of a Brother who might be interested in joining contact the office so they can begin the process. We can stress the need for new members enough, we lose Brothers every year and need you all to consider bringing in new members to keep our numbers up. James McNeal, 32º DSA Sovereign Prince Lodge Princes: February and March proved to be exciting months for the Valley with the Caregiver award recognition on February 14th , family life outing at the Syracuse Crunch Hockey Game on February 25th , The Feast of Tishri on March 14th and perhaps most important was our purple hat presentation luncheon honoring our very own Ill. Richard J. Powell 33° Active Member of Supreme Council on February 27th . I have been a Mason now for 19 years and I can assure you that Ill. Powell and his family exemplify the very best of Masonic Ideals and values. We are so blessed to have him as a part of our Valley. He is the ideal we should all strive for in our Masonic Lives. As of the distribution of this months “Word” each member of the Valley should have been contacted by one of the members of the Executive Committee to update contact information and to just say hi and let you know we truly care about you. This in my view is one of the greatest things about the Scottish Rite. As stated in the vision of the AASR NMJ, “ We will strive to be a fraternity that fulfills our Masonic Obligation to care for our members. I continue to be in awe of how happily surprised our members are to get a call just to chat with no strings attached. Another highlight of our Masonic Obligation will be our annual Feast of the Paschal Lamb Ceremony honoring those who have answered the final call on April 9th . Then on April 30th we will finally bring the 21st and 32nd Degrees to our long awaiting candidates in a joint effort with the Valley of Utica. He looks great and is doing very well and hopes at some point down the road, to return to the Valley. On a sadder note I must report the passing of a couple of old friends. Brother Carl Hoyt of the Masonic war Veterans died unexpectedly, and Brother Don Lord, 99 years old and a 76 year member of the Masonic Fraternity of Scriba Lodge No. 414. Don was active in the Cleveland Lodge No. 613 where I was Raised. Later this spring Bob Tyrrell and I will be visiting Scriba Lodge as a remembrance to Bro. Don. As you read this the event has come and gone with another wonderful outpouring of support. Over 100 people, including friends and families of the Center, enjoyed a wonderful evening of fun, games, music and fellowship. The continued involvement by the members of Scottish Rite and all Masonic Bodies is humbling for those of us working at the Center. We are all enjoying a much-needed Spring Break. March becomes a very long month for our children and tutors and the continued Covid mandates have been wearing for all. The last two and a half years have seen us face, meet and overcome many challenges that we could never have envisioned. The fact that you never wavered in your support has kept us moving forward in a positive vein has allowed us to stay the course and keep our children on track. It is also hard to fathom that we are approaching the end of this academic year and preparing for our Recognition Ceremony. We are planning to meet at Hart’s Hill again this year on June 14. If you would like to attend, please contact the Center as their will be limited seating and a small fee for the “luncheon” to be served that evening. Valley of Excellence Program The Supreme Council, 33° A.A.S.R., NMJ, USA has adopted a Valley of Excellence program to encourage its Valleys to become improved Valleys and to provide Masonic and Scottish Services to its members. The Valley of Syracuse is currently ranked as a top three Valley in the Northern Masonic jurisdiction Our goal is to initiate twenty new 4° members prior to June 15, 2022 to improve that ranking. Talk to your Masonic Brothers who do not belong to Scottish Rite and encourage them to join. Scottish Rite is the most active Concordant Body in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. All members are encouraged to go online and view your membership records and to actively participate in the programs and projects.
