I hope everyone has an enjoyable summer which included the presence of an air conditioner. While there have not been any Valley meetings or events besides the Teddy Bear Golf Classic in August, I have been busy with meetings preparing for the 2017 Supreme Council Session in Rochester, the 32° Scottish Rite Day in November and our Valley’s Degree Day (or “D” Day as D.B. Douglas H. Storey calls it below) in September.
On Saturday, September 24th, the Valley of Syracuse will confer 4°(v), 12°(v), 14°(L), 22°(v), 30°(L) and 31°(v). Taking these degrees will make you eligible for the 32°, which will be conferred in Utica in November. Degree conferrals will start at 9:30 a.m., pausing at 12 Noon for lunch, and continuing in the afternoon. This provides an excellent opportunity for Master Masons to become Scottish Riters as part of a Historical Masonic Event.
So what is this 32° Scottish Rite Day? On the afternoon of Saturday, November 12th, we will participate in a nation-wide celebration of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite by both the Northern Masonic and Southern Jurisdictions. That afternoon, we will see a joint conferral of the 32° by the Valleys of Syracuse, Utica, Binghamton and Norwood at the Administration Building on the campus of the Masonic Care Community. Running concurrently with the degree will be a Ladies Program and the day will be capped off with a festive dinner at the Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro.
Please contact any Valley of Syracuse Officer, Member, or our office for additional details. Contact the office (315) 452-7976 or email@example.com to obtain a petition to take your degrees. Cost for a Master Mason to become a Scottish Rite Mason is $110.00 plus your annual member’s dues. Annual Member’s Dues in the Valley of Syracuse are $83.00 per year. Class members and their wife, or significant other will be guests at the four Valley combined Reunion Banquet Saturday evening November 12, 2016 following the degree conferral. Class members will also received a special jewel commemorating this special day. A letter with more details will be forthcoming to Valley Members concerning registration for the dinner , hotels and the ladies program.
Two other dates to remember for September are the 19th for the Valley Fall Kick Off “Bring a Brother Dinner and the 26th for Officer Training. Please make every effort to attend. Officers who will be unable to make an event should contact their presiding officer or the Valley Secretary and inform them of their absence.
I don’t like ending on a sad note but, earlier this summer we lost Ill. Brother Bruce H. Ackerman, 33°. If you managed to see Brother Bruce’s obituary you saw that he “was a Navy veteran of WWII and a Marine veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of THE CHOSIN FEW, an exclusive Fraternity of Honor of those who served in the Epic Changjin (Chosin) Reservoir Campaign in North Korea during November-December 1950.” Bruce was very active in Freemasonry - “He was raised in Port Byron Lodge 130 in 1962 and affiliated with the former Onondaga Lodge No. 802 in 1965. He served as Worshipful Master in 1971 and Trustee 1972-1975 and 1988-1991. He served as Empire State Mason Representative 1973-1975; Assistant Grand Lecturer 1975-1976; and District Grand Master of Onondaga District 1976-1977. During his term of office, he served as President of the Mid-State Region District Deputies Association. He was a member of Memorial Lodge No. 648 in North Syracuse at the time of his death. Bruce joined Scottish Rite in the Valley of Syracuse in 1975. He served as Thrice Potent Master of the Lodge of Perfection 1972-1973 and as Commander-in-Chief of Consistory 1991-1993. He was coronated 33 Degree Honorary Member of Supreme Council on September 24, 1991 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Bruce also served as Patron of Onondaga Chapter #144 Order of Eastern Star 1970 and 1980.” Above and beyond all of that, and that is extremely impressive, Ill. Bruce H. Ackerman, 33° was an exemplary man, husband and father, one worthy of all to admire. He will be missed...
See you soon.
Ill.'. Richard J Powell, 33°
Commander in Chief
Summer has come and almost gone for 2016. Now is the time to start thinking about how you can participate in some of our degree work forthcoming which will begin within the next two weeks. September 24th is “D” Day and surely we will need your help in one form or another. Whether you can assist with a speaking or non-speaking part in one or more of the degrees being presented on that day, we need your help.
Along that same vane, ask one of your Lodge Brothers to submit a petition and enjoy the degrees that day. One more degree on November 12th and they will be a member of the exclusive 32° Class of 2016.
This is the year, the year of excitement, when two Scottish Rite Jurisdictions come together to present the 32° on the same day. YOU will want to be THERE and be part of the celebration.
D.B. Douglas H. Storey, 32° MSA
Most Wise Master
I trust this is finding you well, rested from summer leisure time, and finding yourselves ready for the upcoming year. The time off we have offers us some time to recharge our batteries, maybe some time to reflect on the various events and lessons learned over the past year.
I know I am personally looking forward to this year as an opportunity to grow in knowledge and as a person. Our Scottish Rite program is certainly rich with opportunities to learn new lessons from degrees we have witnessed before, possibly pushing ourselves to take on a new role, doing a part in one of the degrees, considering taking on a leadership role in one of the bodies.
I’m looking forward to getting to see all of you as we resume.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
James A. Nelson, 32º
Greetings My Brothers,
I want to thank Jack Dombrowski for his leadership during this last year. I will do my best to follow in his footsteps.
I hope all of you had an enjoyable summer. We start out the fall session with a 14th Degree Rehearsal on Monday September 12th at 7:00 PM. On Saturday September 24th , we will confer the 4th Degree Video and present the 14th Degree Live. We have also been honored with a request from the Council on Deliberation to do the 14th Degree live on Saturday October 1st .
My Brothers, if there are any of you who have not seen this Degree, or have not seen it in a long time, I would suggest that you take one of these opportunities to be present for one of the Valley’s “Signature” Degrees.
The Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk-A-Thon will take place on October 8th on the O.E.S. Campus in Oriskany. It begins at 10:00 am with a chicken B-B- Q at 11:30am. Come on out and support our Learning Center.
I would like to extend an invitation to any of my Brothers who have not attended a meeting for some time. The Valley of Syracuse is “Alive and Well”. We would love to see you on the sidelines again.
On September 26th , there will be an Officer’s Training Class. I would ask that all of my Officers attend this meeting. It will begin at 7:30 PM.
May the Great Architect keep you and yours safe and well until we meet again. Please take a moment each day and say a prayer for the Men and Women in our Nation’s Military.
H. Bruce Naumann, 32°
Thrice Potent Master
I hope all of you are enjoying this summer in good health. Unfortunately we have had to say farewell to some fine members of our Valley in the recent months.
I am told there will be some changes at the Masonic Care Community. Most notably occurring at Wiley Hall. This may of interest to anyone planning to move to the Community in the near future.
I look forward to seeing you again as we start another Masonic year. Should you require any type of assistance , or are in need of our aid or sympathy, please contact Brother Robert Tyrrell, or myself.
See you in the Valley.
Dick Freeman, 32°
Welcome to My World
Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY
As I type we are completing our Summer Session at the Center and beginning to prepare for the new Academic Year which will begin in September.
We enjoyed another great year and Recognition Ceremony where we honored all of our children (nine of them will be leaving us , nine will be returning and we will be bringing in nine new children in the fall) and we were also happy to have our Scholars (all now certified tutors) speak about what the Center and Training have meant to them as educators, tutors, and parents of children with Dyslexia.
Our fundraising efforts are ongoing and I am sure that I will have seen many of you at the Annual Teddy Bear Classic Golf Tourney at Vesper Hills. It is always such a great time.
Boscov’s Gala Preview for a Great Cause
