A Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems and a famous Freemason. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet's birthday, 25 January, sometimes also known as Robert Burns Day or Burns Night, although they may in principle be held at any time of the year. Burns suppers are most common in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but occur wherever there are Burns Clubs, Scottish Societies, Masonic Lodges, expatriate Scots, or aficionados of Burns' poetry. The Knights of St. Andrew will be holding their 2022 Burns Supper on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022 at Coleman's Irish Pub 100 South Lowell Avenue, Syracuse, NY. Social Time will begin at 5:00 PM. Dinner will be buffet style and cost will be $45.00 per person. Wives/significant others/guests are invited. This event is open to all but seating is limited to 65 so make your reservations now! I have two vacancies in the Rose Croix line - a Senior Warden & Junior Warden. I will be calling brothers to see if I can fill these positions. I have scheduled a rehearsal for 18th degree on Sunday November 14, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Memorial Lodge. I have people coming to help me with tips on directing the degree. I have talked to people involved setting up the degree and have data on the setup. This will help me to familiarize with different sections of the degree. I also want to comment on the Knighting Ceremony at Norwood. I want to congratulate the 9 new 32nd Degree Brothers. The ceremony was very interesting to witness. I enjoyed meeting 2 cast members for 18th Degree. The 17th & 18th Degrees are scheduled on November 27, 2021 starting at 9:30 PM. The Veterans Dinner is scheduled for November 15, 2021 at 6:00 PM. Let us keep the veterans in our thoughts. Richard E. Barrett, 32° Most Wise Master Council Greetings Sovereign Princes. Winter is upon us and so is the holiday season. I would like to congratulate Ill. Earl Tuttle and Ill. Larry Egnaczyk on receiving their white hats. I want to say hi to all you snowbirds, we miss you all in the Valley and hope to see you all very soon. I want to make sure and wish everybody a joyous holiday season however you celebrate. Things in the Valley are moving along with degrees being done, events happening and Brothers and their spouses celebrating the familyhood that is Scottish Rite. Please try to remember those less fortunate this holiday season and give whatever you can to help out. Stay safe everybody. God bless you all, Freemasons, our military and this great country. James McNeal, 32º DSA Sovereign Prince Lodge Princes: November was yet another bustling month for the Valley. Our Veterans Recognition Night was a huge success coupled with the presentation of “The Ring that went around the World” A tribute to and an emotional rendition of Patriotism, Heroism, and Masonic Brotherhood that was written by our very own Ill. Sandy Sampson. Then the end of November followed up with the Conferral of the Rose Croix 17 th and 18 th Degrees and now December is ALREADY HERE!! Soon we will all be braving snow and ice as old Jack Frost brings in the deepest of winter weather. But December also brings on several religious holidays; Hanukkah; Christmas; and Kwanzaa along with warm cozy nights with family and friends. December also brings on Santa and the Joy of wonderment in little children’s eyes. Whatever your specific December holiday celebration the Valley of Syracuse, and the Officers of the Lodge of Perfection want to wish you and your Families the very best of the holiday season and many wishes for a Prosperous New Year!! Contemplating on the Holiday Seasons as a Freemason I wonder…. (An Excerpt from an article written by Brother David Downie of St. Trinian’s Lodge #2050 Isle of Man) Why do we have this special holiday season? We celebrate religious beliefs about the birth of goodness, and hope for the future: we reaffirm the belief that people are basically good and can develop into loving, caring, helpful, supporting friends to each other. We look to a new year where things can be better. We do this at this season whether we are celebrating the Christian nativity or the Jewish Hanukkah with its lights and gifts in the story of peace, or the Hindu Diwali with its festival of lights and gifts of sweets and toys, or even if we hold no formal religion except the pleasure of seeing a child’s face transfixed with wonder and delight. And why are we Freemasons? Because we believe that there are important things like goodness and hope for the future and that men can develop into loving, caring, helpful, supporting Brethren to their families and each other. We not only look to a future where things can be better, but we see it as our role as Free and Accepted or Symbolic Masons, to help build that future. So, I feel I can safely say that The December Holiday Season embodies Freemasonry idealism, not only do the holidays shows so many of these signs and tokens of Freemasonry they bring us a message that we as Freemasons can heed for the whole year long ...Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards Men!!! Peace be with you my Princes Terry A. Byard, 32° DSA Thrice Potent Master Hospitaler Greetings Princes, I am delighted to report that Illustrious Gary Kall is now back home and on the mend!! Other Brothers we need to continue to keep in our thoughts and prayers are John Fuller, and Stephen Maddox Sr. Covid infections are still a concern, and many of us will soon be attending Holiday parties and dinners, so please continue to use common sense when out and about. Dianne and I got our booster shots last week and hopefully if exposed it will keep us safe. If any Brother or Sister that reads this article has an issue and would like me to include it in this report, please contact me and we will discuss it. The Hospitalers Fund is always in need. If you are able to help, please send a check made out to Central City Bodies, and directed for the Hospitalers Fund, If you are in need of some confidential assistance please contact Bob Tyrrell or myself…We may be able to provide some type of help. Have a Merry Christmas! Dick Freeman – 315-837-4962 freeman1574@frontier.com Welcome to My World Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY Finally, it really begins to feel a bit more ‘normal’ at the Center, even with the continuing COVID protocols. All of our children and tutors have begun their sessions and are getting ‘reacquainted” from last year or acquainting themselves this year. We still miss having the families entering the Center but understand the necessity of strict protocols during this time. The Center is a busy place, as usual, with 17 children, 8 tutors (including myself) and 3 trainees (two Level 1 and one Level 2). We have a minimum of 8 children and 5 tutors any given day, and of course, Gineal at the Front Desk to help keep us all in order. It hardly seems possible that we are already approaching the Holiday Season but the encroaching cool weather and solid precipitation is a good indicator. Since we started a week later than usual, we will be moving our mid-year and end of year assessments ahead a week which will still allow us to plan our Recognition Ceremony for the second Tuesday in June (June 14 th ). It makes such a difference to have that time to recognize our children and tutors. We are planning our GALA Celebration and fund-raiser for the Second Saturday in March (March 12th ) at Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro. We hope to have a “Family Celebration” this year that will include Games, Music and Dancing- something for everybody. (And, of course, we plan to have our exciting Basket Raffle.) .We hope you will consider joining us for an evening of fun and fellowship. We continue to be ever appreciative of your continued support, whether in body or donation (and for many, both) that allows us to help so many children in Central New York. Our wait list is still two years out and we are always looking for more people interested in our annual training course that allows us to continue to bring in more children. Many of our certified trainees are working schools and some are also taking on children privately. Your support reaches many, many families in many ways. Blessing to all and have a Happy Holiday Season! Linda L. I urge you to support this request. Any contribution you may make is significant. The number of members from a state that contribute to the Blue Envelope Appeal directly impacts the dollar amounts allocated to each state for distribution to our scholars. The percentage of members from each Valley that contribute is key to distribution of the Abbott Scholarship Funds and to the Valley’s rankings in the Supreme Council “Valley of Excellence” ratings. The Valley of Syracuse receives an average of eleven Scholarship applications from our college students seeking financial aid to assist them pay for their education each year. Abbott Scholarships funded by Supreme Council, NMJ or a New York State Educational Financial Assistance Grant funded by the New York State Scottish Rite Charities Corporation are assisting the children and grandchildren of our current and deceased members. We have eight students related to our Valley’s members currently receiving Scottish Rite funded financial aid for the 2021 - 2022 academic year. These young people are our future. We thank you for your support. Jim Swan Valley Secretary HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! The festive Holiday Season is upon us once again. The traditional greetings of “Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!” have given way to the now socially acceptable greeting “Happy Holidays!” Whatever your preference, the Officers of Central City Bodies, and the staff at the Valley of Syracuse Scottish Rite Office extends their sincere Holiday Greetings to all who take the time to scan and read our Scottish Rite page each issue. To the leaders in the four Bodies of Scottish Rite in the Valley of Syracuse this year thank you for the support and assistance provided to your office staff. Casual Order from the Menu Consistory Greetings, As we have entered a new season, the fresh crisp air of Autumn is a welcoming site. Our Lodges have been fully immersed in doing degree work to raise a new crop of Master Masons. I have on occasion stated that we members of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite are all Lodge Ambassadors and should be offering Scottish Rite Programs to our respective Symbolic Lodges. The Valley Membership Action Team consists of myself as Chairman, Ill.: Earl Tuttle 33° Membership and New Members Recruiting, D.B. William Toth, II 32° MSA, Members Mentoring, D.B. Terry Byard 32° MSA, Rite on The Road and D.B. Kenneth Sterling 32° MSA, Lodge Ambassador Chair. These dedicated Brothers may call on you to assist them with their respective programs and it is my hope that you will cheerfully step up to lend them a hand. Even better, contact them yourself and offer your assistance. It is our goal to build our membership to a level that it once was. Too many of our members are laying down their working tools and we need to rebuild our roles of fellow workmen so Scottish Rite Freemasonry can continue to shine in the Valley of Syracuse. Our Veterans Recognition Night will be Monday, November 15th , 2021, with a social at 6:00pm, dinner at 6:30pm and the program will move into the Lodge room about 7:30pm. Congratulations to Ill:. Robert M. Tyrrell, 33° for being appointed as the Deputies Representative for the Valley of Syracuse. Fraternally, D.B. Lawrence W. Egnaczyk, 32° MSA Commander in Chief lwegnaczyk@verizon.net / (H) Ph. # 315-637-4143 / (C) Ph. # 315-632-1043 Chapter The Rose Croix degree first appeared in 1757 in France on a diploma for Brother Targe. The role of Jesus as an exemplar, the rose and cross as emblems and a single cabalistic word were understood to be the True Word past masons. However, we learn that finding the True Word of a Christian Mason requires a new law of Christianity. This includes the new theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity. The new Law is a law of love which all men everywhere may understand and practice. Love is more important than all of the virtues. The Rose Croix Degree teaches that the new temple is in the heart of a man where God is worshiped in spirit and in truth. The degree uses the events from the life of Jesus to teach the lesson of this degree. It grants each man his right to answer life's questions in his own way according to his religious beliefs. The symbol on Jesus' Cross is I.N.R.I. which translates to Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Becomes the True Word which unlocks the Book of Life's seals. This all the virtues of Faith,Hope and Charity are the keys to the kingdom of God. The information above is courtesy of The Plumbline “ The quarterly bulletin of the Scottish Rite Research Society” volume 28 No. 1 Spring, 2021and the 18th Degree Knight of the Rose Croix of H.R.D.M. (2007). I look forward to the degree and all its education opportunities when it is presented on Saturday, November 27h. Richard E. Barrett, 32° Most Wise Master Council Greetings Sovereign Princes. Fall is upon us and with that comes opportunities to get more involved in your Valley. We are calling on all members and especially newer members to come out and be a part of our degrees. CPJ will be presenting the 15th in January and we are casting for that degree now. A lot of our members who take part in degrees, especially the bigger parts, are getting older and would probably cherish the chance to mentor their replacements. Contact either me or the office to volunteer. As we enter the holiday season please remember to treasure your families and get together in a safe way. This month we honor those who served with Veteran’s Day, remember to thank them for their service. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Chanukah. Stay safe everybody. God bless you all, Freemasons, our military and this great country. James McNeal, 32º DSA Sovereign Prince Lodge Princes and Brethren All: Wow, The Scottish Rite and the Valley has really kicked off the fall season with a bang. Since my last writing we held the Council of Deliberation (COD) on the 24th and 25th of September; Lodge of Perfection Degrees on the 11th of October; White Hat Recognition Night on the 18th of October; and the 22nd and 32nd Degrees in The Valley of Norwood. Many Congratulations are in order for our newest 32nd Degree Masons!! It is our greatest desire that you all become fully engaged and love the AASR as much as we do. The Council of Deliberation was extra special this year with the Sovereign Grand Commander, Peter J. Samiec, 33° in attendance for the full weekend. As in the last few years the Knights of Saint Andrew were responsible for several of the tasks and administrative duties at the session and as usual did an outstanding job. Many thanks go out to all Knights in attendance that pitched in and to Ill. Rick Powell for organizing the Knights and setting up the schedule of duties. Of special note this year was the recognition given to Ill. Jim and Sharon Swan for their years of service and familial devotion to the Scottish Rite and the Council of Deliberation (Jim had served as COD Secretary for the past 10 years, this being his last year). On a very personal note, I can’t think of a finer example of service to our Beloved Craft than the example Ill. Jim and Sharon Swan give each and every day!! Also, at the COD a New Leadership program has been announced, under the direction of Ill. Rick Powell and his team, called the “Excelsior” program. It is a multi-faceted program that will include Virtual and in person leadership sessions. A lecture series, and a video news series called XLCR32. This exciting new program is just another example of how Scottish Rite Masonry in New York is leading the way in opportunities to improve ourselves as men and Masons. All while being at the forefront of adapting technology to its effective use in our fraternity. More information may be obtained by visiting www.nyscottishritemasons.org/excelsior Speaking of technology, there is some really cool Masonic discussion going on right now. Peacock TV (a NBC streaming Service) is hosting a mini-series on Dan Browns book “The Lost Symbol” and two of the premier Masonic Podcast shows are doing specials, talking about the Masonic symbology displayed on the show and in Dan Browns Book. They are illustrating what is fact and what is fiction on the story, exploring easter eggs etc. The two Podcast shows can be seen on YouTube; One is “Symbols & Secrets” Hosted by Maynard Edwards of the AASR Southern Masonic Jurisdiction. The other is “The Found Symbol” Produced by the Masons of the “Masonic Round Table. If you are interested in our symbology and are technically inclined I highly recommend checking these out, its fun and informative. Coming back to the Valley, November will bring in our Veterans Recognition Night on November 15th and the Chapter of Rose Croix Degrees on the 27 th . Each of these events will prove to continue our strive for excellence in programing at the Valley. In closing I submit to you a Thanksgiving Prayer from Arthur R. Herrmann at the Masonic Poets Society “Oh, Lord now this we are thankful for: The good things life has held in store; The love of those within our home, and friends to greet wherever we roam; the health and strength wherewith to toil, the bounteous food from freedoms soil; we thank the for the right to pray and worship thee in our own way; To live within land that’s free; For this dear Lord, our thanks to thee; And through these blessings, one by one, may thy will, Lord, on earth be done!” May you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving!! Have a Happy Thanksgiving … Dick Freeman – 315-837-4962 freeman1574@frontier.com Welcome to My World Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY This is a very strange feeling to say that I have little new news to share with you right now. We were gearing up to begin tutoring at the beginning of October when we were thrown a bit of a curve ball. Two of our tutors contracted COVID (FYI- all of our present tutors have been vaccinated) outside of the Center, two more were exposed and one of the children due to come had to have a tonsillectomy. So- erring on the side of caution we chose to postpone our start date until Oct. 13th. Gineal and I made good use of our ‘time alone’ by dealing with long awaited files that could be thinned down. The task is not yet complete but just getting to start is a great feeling. Be aware that we will be reopening this fall under the protocols we followed last year to keep the children at the Center. All of the Centers are following a similar route and I am in hopes that we will all have the same success that we had last year. For those of you that I had the pleasure of seeing at Council of Deliberation, again my deepest Thanks for your continued support. It was truly wonderful to see so many of you ‘face-to-face’ again. What weighed 8lbs.2oz. was 21” long and arrived on September 8,2021? The answer is Ivan Oleksii Egnaczyk, our 1st Grandchild. Thank you and congratulations to Sean and Emily for their hard work. We always tell our members that family comes first and foremost. Our Masonic family is far reaching. I felt evidence of this at Supreme Council Session in Cleveland Ohio last month as Earl Tuttle, George Caswell, Carl Klossner, and Gordon Hubbell were to be Coroneted 33° Scottish Rite Masons. The warmth of the greetings we were met with was unbelievable. Everywhere we went we were congratulated by Men and women alike from the Scottish Rite Family as we were identified as Candidates by the credentials we wore. What a truly warm feeling to be treated this way. This is how we should always greet our Brothers, Sisters and the public, to lead by example how to treat one another as Masons should do. At the NYS dinner it was announced who the next candidates to be elected 33° are. Congratulations to D.B. William H. Toth II,32° M.S.A. for being chosen to be Coroneted in Louisville KY in 2023. Special thanks to Garry and Lynn Visconti for hosting the Hospitality Room at the NYS hotel and Jim and Sharon Swan for organizing the NYS dinner event. Check your Schedules for a road trip to the Valley of Norwood on October 25,2021 when the Consistory will open and confer the 22° ad the 32° and Knight the Class as S.P.R.S. Our Family life events were a huge success, and we will look into more events in the near future. Fraternally, D.B. Lawrence W. Egnaczyk, 32° MSA Commander in Chief lwegnaczyk@verizon.net / (H) Ph. # 315-637-4143 / (C) Ph. # 315-632-1043 Chapter I'm excited about the upcoming year in Scottish Rite and all its challenges. I’d like to talk about the recruiting of new members. Memorial Lodge 648 has received input from a private donor who said he will pay initiation fees for as many as nine new members to join Scottish Rite. Perhaps some Scottish Riters from other lodges would consider doing this as an incentive as well. New members have fun engaging in social events while learning knowledge to improve themselves. The Rose Croix degrees are scheduled to be conferred on November 27th. This includes the 17th & 18th Degrees. Right now I'm trying to get a cast together for the various parts. If you are interested contact me at 315 632-1395. I also have 2 vacant officer’s positions in the Rose Croix line. Contact the office or myself for more information. Richard E. Barrett, 32° Most Wise Master Council Greetings Sovereign Princes. Hope you are all staying safe and enjoying the crisp fall days. By the time you read this another session of COD will be in the books and I am sure it was up to its usual spectacular standards. The Valley is busy prepping for live degree work so remember to volunteer as much as you can to help. As we get back to gathering together in person I would like to say that it will be good to see you all again. There is a lot of excitement and activities in The Valley so lets hope to see some old familiar faces but more importantly, some of the newer members coming out to events and enjoying some good fellowship. On a personal note, when you pay your dues why not round up the amount and give to the charities? Every bit helps and is truly appreciated by those in need. Stay safe everybody. God bless you all, Freemasons, our military and this great country. James McNeal, 32º DSA Sovereign Prince Lodge My Distinguished Brethren and Princes: With the Grace of the Great Architect, September brings the true beginning of our many Masonic outings, events and busy schedules for the ensuing year!! Dependent on the “Word’s” distribution schedule the Valley Fall Kickoff & Brother Bring a Brother Night should be just days away. I’m so excited for the opportunity to be with my fellow Scottish Rite Brothers and hopefully the opportunity to meet new Brethren interested in joining our productive and exciting journey in Scottish Rite at the Valley of Syracuse! This also marks a time for change and great new leadership in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. As of the Annual Session of Supreme Council held in Cleveland, Ohio, New York’s very own Ill. Peter J. Samiec, 33° was named Sovereign Grand Commander, Ill. G Michael Morris, 33° will now serve as Deputy for New York State replacing Ill. David P. Spencer, 33° and Ill. Richard J. Powell, 33° has been elected as an Active Member of Supreme Council. We are also very proud to announce our Commander in Chief, D.B. Lawrence W. Egnaczyk, 32° and D.B. Earl L. Tuttle, 32° were coroneted 33° Honorary Members of the Supreme Council. Our deepest congratulations to these outstanding leaders for their accomplishments and dedication to our noble craft. As we are starting a new Masonic year, I also thought it would be a good opportunity to explore the meaning and value of the Lodge of Perfection. Valley of Boston writes on its website: “The 4t through14th degrees are called the Ineffable Degrees because their principal purpose is the investigation and contemplation of the ineffable name of the Deity. The degrees amplify the legend of the Master Mason degree, and stories of the biblical era, leading up to the building of King Solomon’s Temple. These degrees are designed to impress more forcefully the teachings of the first three degrees. Each of our degrees takes it theme from one of the many names of God, “God is Love”, “God is Merciful”, “God is Just”. Scottish Rite Masons know that they are not perfect, but that there is a path to Perfection. In the Fourteenth Degree, the final and climactic lesson of the Lodge of Perfection is revealed, a belief in the ever living and true God and a deep reverence for His Holy Name. It is a profoundly religious degree, not dealing in a particular doctrine, but encouraging each of us to worship God at an altar of our individual choice. It is expressive of the deep spiritual roots of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and of our constant endeavor to attain that perfection of character embodied in our concept of a loving Heavenly Father, a personal God.” As we all begin this new Masonic Year let us all reflect upon the lessons of the Craft Degrees and the Ineffable Degrees of the Lodge of Perfection and how they apply to our lives. Let us all strive to embody the lessons of our beautiful Craft. God Bless Terry A. Byard, 32° DSA Thrice Potent Master Hospitaler Greetings Brothers! Labor Day has passed and the hummingbird feeder is back in storage till next spring. Dianne is canning tomatoes, and Syracuse just beat Ohio! I think Fall has arrived. It will be good to see activities reopening in our Valley. Just to follow up on my “growing old” articles, as many of us are approaching 80, our goal is to remain upright and be grateful we made it this far. Very few of us at this stage still have all our original parts, but life is great and worth the struggle of growing old. If anyone has an issue that you would like me to write about, please give me a call and discuss it with me. Please continue to keep those in need… in our thoughts. The Hospitalers Fund is always in need. If you are able to help, please send a check made out to Central City Bodies, and directed for the Hospitalers Fund. If you are in need of some confidential assistance, please contact Bob Tyrrell or myself… We may be able to provide some type of help. Continue to follow safety guidelines… Dick Freeman – 315-837-4962 freeman1574@frontier.com Welcome to My World Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY As you read this we are back in the Center full-time, using the same protocols we followed last year. We were the only Center able to tutor our children face-to-face (across 5ft tables, behind plexiglas dividers, wearing clear masks). It was a major accomplishment on the part of the staff, Board, children and families that we completed the year with no major COVID issues and that we were able to enjoy an in-person Recognition Ceremony to celebrate all. What a fun time was had by all at our very successful Golf Tourney- it never disappoints. We hope you will plan to join us next year. This year we plan to welcome 9 new students and welcome back another 9. We have two new scholars (practitioner trainees) and 5 returning tutors. As always, it will be a busy time. It is my plan to have seen many of you at COD and that many if you will have been able to participate in our Walkathon fundraiser.
