Consistory
My Brothers,
As our warm weather started to slip away, I looked forward to the cooler air and the vibrant colors of Fall. Our Valley is usually remarkably busy this time of the year with degree work following our Valley Fall Kick-off program. This year has proven to be extremely challenging for all of society, not just Freemasonry.
I was able to attend the 1st of 3 Virtual Reunions presented by The Supreme Council of Scottish Rite of The Northern Masonic Jurisdiction on October 3,2020. The program was extremely well done and I encourage any Freemasons that have an interest in becoming a Scottish Rite Brother to contact the Valley of Syracuse office immediately to submit a petition for membership if you would like to join in on the 3rd Virtual Reunion class to be presented on November 14 th 2020 at 9 am. To join this program, you will need to log on to the website with your new membership number and pre-register.
I am pleased to announce that the Class Sponsor for the 2020-2021 class will be D.B. Douglas H. Storey, 32° MSA. Doug has been Hospitaller, T.P.M., M.W.M. for the Valley of Syracuse. Doug is a member of the Valley of Syracuse Scholarship Committee as well as the N.Y.S. C.O.D. Educational Support Committee.
The Valley of Syracuse has developed a Membership Action Team consisting of Earl Tuttle, Bill Toth, Terry Byard, Ken Sterling and myself. Terry will chair the Rite on the Road program. Ken will chair the Lodge Ambassador program. Earl will chair the Membership & New Members Recruiting Committee. Bill Toth will chair the Members Mentoring Committee and I will oversee the Membership Action Team. This will be an exciting time for the Valley of Syracuse when we can travel to our neighboring Lodges and present our programs as part of their Trestleboard.
This year our Veterans Recognition will be somewhat different because of the restrictions in place due to Covid -19 we cannot hold a public event or dinner.
Stay safe...

Chapter
With Covid 19 causing the Valley to take unusual steps for our Brothers safety our normal schedule has been suspended. Because of this, I have chosen to write about the history, duties, lessons and important symbols of the two degrees making up the Chapter of Rose Croix (17th and 18th Degrees).
As I stated last month, I have traveled with Brother Richard Freeman, Gary Phillips (Valley of Utica) and Brad Tift (Valley of Utica) to various Valleys within and outside of New York State in search of various degrees to complete our passports. While witnessing the needed degrees for our passports we often witness degrees that we had previously viewed elsewhere. I notice that I was learning and understanding more about the purpose behind each degree as they were performed. Thus, I would like to enlighten our Brothers about the degrees of the Chapter that I have been given the opportunity to lead this year.
The Chapter of Rose Croix was originally a degree unto itself. It was part of Masons (York or Blue Lodge) and was presented to a candidate after he was Knighted into the Knights Templar. This degree was first recorded in England around 1770 and is believed to have originated from the French Masons. Then in 1845 when the Supreme Council of England and Wales was formed it was moved to its present position as the 18th degree of the Ancient and Accepted Rite. The degree has developed over the years and moved away from its military style but has retained some names associated with the military such as Generals and Captain of the Guard. In addition, some phrases in the degree ritual are still connected to the Templar’s past.
I trust these articles will keep you reading and help to make the 17th and 18th Degrees more meaningful to each Brother over the next few months.

Greetings Sovereign Princes.
Well, there is no doubt fall is here. How many of you attended the first virtual reunion? If you did, you saw a world class presentation. If you didn’t there are two more opportunities to attend. Pre-registration is a must.
As I am writing this I am looking at my flag and thinking what a truly wonderful country we live in and what an example Freemasonry can be for everybody. We honor and respect each other and even celebrate our differences along with our mutual love of country and God. Remember to contribute to our charities as you can, they can’t do their valuable work without our support.
Hopefully you are all staying safe along with your families. Stay safe everybody. God bless you all, Freemasons, our military and this great country.

Greetings Princes. With this writing, as always, I hope you and your families are doing well and staying healthy in these trying times! Masonry is beginning to open back up with limited attendance and strict guidelines to adhere to. The Scottish Rite is no exception. We were able to host our annual meeting along with election and installation of Officers on September 14 th . The event was lightly attended but well received. It was so nice to be able to see one another and share some well needed Brotherly Love and Affection.
The executive committee has also been meeting regularly, via Zoom, to Keep the Valley running smooth and plan for the ensuing year. Mark your calendars as we have meetings currently scheduled for November 16 th and December 14 th and will be able to have two meetings a month beginning January 2021. The schedule of events is still being worked but at least we are moving in the right direction.
Of special note, from the last Executive Committee, Valley has had 10 recipients of the Abbott Scholarship this year. Congratulations to these bright young students!! I also want to mention that we all should have received the “Blue Envelope” appeal in the mail by now. Although our main philanthropy is the Dyslexia Centers the “Blue Envelope” appeal supports these great Scholarships and contributes to the Valleys success. Please consider donating.
The Executive Committee is also reorganizing a few sub-committees into a “Membership Action Team” to put new emphasis on both our members and potential members. Among this effort, I will be chairing the “Right on the Road” Initiative. The Supreme Council is allowing Valleys to present Scottish Rite Programs at Lodges and other locations within our jurisdictions. These programs available to Masons and Non-Masons, will spark more interest in the Scottish Rite throughout the jurisdiction and, when required, will be followed up with the actual “Rite on the Road” presented to Masons in good standing, wishing to become Scottish Ritter’s, conferring the 4th Degree and perhaps a second degree at their own Lodges. I am very excited about the program and looking for your support. As we open back up, survey your Lodges and Districts and see if there is any interest, I would be happy to work with any of you to set up a program and schedule.
Princes, the beautiful university of Masonry, the Scottish Rite, and the Valley of Syracuse is yours. We all can contribute to Its future success by sharing with our Masonic Brethren and potential candidates perhaps the greatest Masonic experience in all of New York!! Until we meet again my Princes, I am yours in the Faith, God Bless!

Greetings Brethren,
I am currently having problems with double vision. My Eye Doctor has prescribed prism glasses that help, but normal function is still a long way from normal. There is no treatment, and in time my sight should return to normal. If anyone has had this condition, and has some tips on getting through it, please let me know.
We were saddened to hear of Frank Wheelock’s loss, and keep Dave Freeman in your thoughts as he continues treatment.
That will do it for now, as I have to go get my flu shot! If you are in need of some confidential assistance please contact us…We may be able to provide some type of help.
Remember to wear that mask!

Welcome to My World
Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY
As I write this, we are at the end of Day One back at the Center tutoring children. We are thrilled to say that all has gone smoothly thus far. The children were given a run-through on the hand washing-changing into clear masks routine that is done after they have entered the Center with a completed Covid 19 form to which we add their current temperature. Then we follow the one-way path to the tutoring rooms where the child and tutor (wearing their fitted clear masks) work on either side of a 5 ft table with a 3-foot-high clear shield in between them.
Everyone working in the tutoring rooms, tutors and children, have their own bin of materials to be accessed by that person alone. Entrance and exit to and from the Center is staggered so only one child is processed through the entry way at any given time. The entrance is controlled by Gineal, our Administrative Assistant, via text. Each family or tutor texts their arrival and if a child’s tutor is already in the Center, the child can be admitted. Again, this is done one at a time. When a child had completed their session and changed out masks, Gineal will text the family that they may enter to retrieve the child. The clear masks are held in zip lock bags and cleaned in between sessions.
In between each entry and exit the entry is disinfected by Gineal or myself, while the tutors disinfect their rooms after each child leaves. We also have disinfectant materials around the copier so everything can be cleaned after each use. If new or different forms are needed, tutors will ask Gineal. Thanks to our Board members we feel as prepared as can be and the families have been extremely supportive of our efforts.
This being said, we are preparing for the unforeseen. Should we have to go back to virtual tutoring (definitely no one’s choice at this time) we are surveying families and tutors as to their willingness and/or ability to be on-line. We know not all will be able or willing to go that route, but we want to be as ready as possible should it become our only option.
As always, we appreciate your support, whether through our virtual fund raisers or just keeping us in your prayers. We could not do this without you and our families have expressed their thankfulness for this opportunity for their children. It is my hope that I can give your more positive news next month.
Happy Fall!

Blue Envelope Appeal
You recently received the annual “Blue Envelope Appeal” letter from Supreme Council requesting your annual contribution. I urge you to support this request. Any contribution you may make is significant.
The number of members from a state that contribute to the Blue Envelope Appeal directly impacts the dollar amounts allocated to each state for distribution to our scholars. The percentage of members that contribute is key to distribution of the Abbott funds.
The Valley of Syracuse receives an average of eleven Scholarship applications from our college students seeking financial aid to assist them pay for their education each year. Abbott Scholarships funded by Supreme Council, NMJ or a New York State Educational Financial Assistance Grant funded by the New York State Scottish Rite Charities Corporation are assisting the children and grandchildren of our current and deceased members.
We have ten students related to our Valley’s members currently receiving Scottish Rite funded financial aid for the 2020-2021 academic year. These young people are our future. We thank you for your support.

Children’s Dyslexia Center Central New York Annual Walk-A-Thon
Saturday October 3, 2020 is the day we held the 15th Annual Walk-A-Thon to support our Children’s Dyslexia Center in Oriskany. No camaraderie, no snacks, no “I can walk faster than you” banter. No tour of the Center this year. No one on the OES Oriskany campus this year. WHY? COVID-19 invaded our party.
We had a virtual party. If you forgot to write your contribution check for this event or no “walker” reminded you to help or join the fun it is not too late to assist us to meet our fundraising goal. Take a minute.
Write your contribution check, payable to Children’s Dyslexia Center, CNY 103, and mail it to Craig E. Cobb, 115 Haverhill Dr., Dewitt, NY 13214-2477. Thank you for your continued support.
Happy Thanksgiving
Family Celebrations are important to all of us. Thanksgiving is a festive time for Families to gather together to give thanks and blessings for the bounty we all enjoy.
Many college students are home for their first break from studies. Parents and Grandparents gather around the “Harvest Table” with their families for the traditional Thanksgiving Feast.
May we all give our blessings and special thanks to our essential workers and their families.
The Valley Office Staff, on behalf of all Officers and Members of Central City Bodies A.A.S.R., Valley of Syracuse wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. May peace and goodwill be the toast of this special Day.
Please take care when you travel to be with your families and have a safe Holiday.
