Greetings Brethren!
Scottish Rite is off to a good start in 2024! Once again the Robert Burns Supper was an outstanding event. In my opinion it is the premier event in our Valley and just seems to get better and better each year. We also held our Spring Membership and Ladies Night hosted by the Lodge of Perfection and conferred the 17° and 18°. All-in-all, a successful start to the New Year.
While February can be a cold and dreary month, it is brightened somewhat by our very popular Family Life Event at the Syracuse Crunch. The puck drops at 7:00 PM but you will want to get there a little early to socialize. This is an outstanding evening and a great way to shake off the winter blues. If you are reading this before January 31st , there is still time to get in a last minute reservation. Contact the Office ASAP. Go Crruunncchh!
Next up is our Caregivers Event on Monday, February 12th . Bring your Ladies for social time at 6:00 PM. Dinner will be at 6:30 PM with a program to follow in the Lodge Room at 7:30 PM.
Our last event in February is one that I am very much looking forward to. It is a special adaptation of the 19° which has been organized and will be presented by our Knights of St. Andrew. You won’t get a spoiler from me, so you will have to attend to find out just how the degree has been modified. The KSA Venerable Master, Tim Page, spent a considerable amount of time rewriting portions of the degree to change the setting. This adaption will NOT earn you credit for the 19° in your Passport...for that you will have to attend our Degree Festival in April. One of the unique characteristics of some of the Scottish Rite Degrees is that they are set in a more contemporary time period than the Craft, Chapter and Council Degrees in the York Rite. My thanks to the Deputy for allowing us to present this adaption. I hope you will join me on February 19th at 7:30 PM for an interesting adaptation of this degree. Light refreshments will be available after the presentation.
Speaking of Degrees...I can’t emphasize enough the importance of reaching our new member goal of 14 for the 2023 – 2024 year. It will be all but impossible to be a Valley of Excellence this year unless we meet that goal. If you know of someone who has an interest in Scottish Rite Masonry, get them a petition. Candidates will be able to start their Scottish Rite journey at any of our scheduled degree nights. I have committed that if we have a petition, we will present the 4° along with any other scheduled degrees. Since we have scheduled a 5 Degree Festival on April 13th , a candidate can start at any time and complete the balance of their 5 degrees on April 13th and attend our Reunion Banquet on April 22nd.
We are also in need of some Rite on the Road Events to replace two that had to be cancelled in the fall of 2023. Our 1st Lt. Commander is ready, willing, and able to take the show on the road. Please contact myself or the Scottish Rite Office if you know of an opportunity to present the Rite on the Road in a local Lodge.
Lastly, please save the date of March 23rd which is the Feast of the Pascal Lamb. This is a very moving memorial to all of our Brothers who have passed to the Celestial Lodge during the past year. The Ceremony is at 2:30 PM with a light buffet to follow at 4:00 PM.

Happy February! As I approach my 55-year-old birthday this month, I look again at many of my friends from high school and how they are doing via social media. While many are doing well, I receive occasional posts declaring loneliness and loss of friends and others in their lives. There has been a lot of public discussion, and even the British government has a “Minister of Loneliness.” In rural Upstate New York, where cows outnumber people, how can our fraternity, and especially Scottish Rite, help our members address our individual loneliness? First, we have regular events that are social, stimulate learning and thought, and have fun. Second, the Valley of Syracuse has made a commitment to make regular contact with our members. If you have not received contact, please contact our office proactively.
You don’t have to be lonely. Even if you attend a Masonic event and do not immediately connect, be patient. Combating loneliness requires a spirit of inquiry, patience, and connectivity. We can overcome our fears to find connectivity---at the age of 18 or 88. For me, it will be age 55. See you in the Valley!

In our Blue Lodge we are taught that our goal is to make “Good Men Better “. So, what can we offer these Master Masons that would attract them to join the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry? They could form friendships beyond their home Lodges. There are further opportunities to increase their knowledge of the history of the origins of Masonry in Colonial America. They can search for more Masonic Light by doing research through the Museum archives at Supreme Council Headquarters in Lexington, Massachusetts.
There are many social events that are open for the Ladies to attend and enjoy making new friendships on their own. Whatever you may be searching for, I bet you will find it as a Scottish Rite Brother. One thing we ask of you is to get involved in your Valley, participate in Degree presentations, help to promote and support membership opportunities. The Valley of Syracuse will always welcome visitors to our open events.
How can a Master Mason get started? They must contact the Valley Secretary and apply for membership. I usually have a few that I keep in my Masonic notebook for an interested Brother to present. This must be accompanied by the $160 initiation fee and a copy of their Blue Lodge dues card proving they are a member of a recognized Lodge in good standing. The Valley Secretary will notify the petitioner when a scheduled degree is presented either in the Valley of Syracuse or on the Thursday Night at the Right program.
Check your 2024 Spring Schedule for upcoming events and support the Valley of Syracuse programs as often as you can. Don’t forget your sweetheart on February 14,2024.

Welcome to My World
Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY
Welcome to the middle of winter. The preparation for the Gala is well underway as well as the preparation for all the baskets that will be flowing in at the end of the month. The children love gazing at these treasures as they come in, excited at what they will be trying to achieve when the raffle happens. This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year and this year’s entertainment is sure to be exciting for all. Thank you Board Members, for all of the planning and time invested in making this Gala happen. Thank you as well to all who are participating, donating, creating baskets, or helping in any way. Every little part makes a colossal difference.
The letters for our Sponsor a Child were sent out with updates on the children to the sponsors. The gratitude for each Sponsor A Child is beyond measure. Each one of these Sponsors changes a child’s life in a positive, impactful way. Each Sponsor ensures that we can have one more child that moves off our never-ending wait list and receive services.
Our applications are arriving in droves right now as most districts have completed the mid-year assessments and find children in need of our services. So, the pile of applications continues and so increases the number in our file cabinets for waitlisted children.
I am so pleased with the progress of our children as well as Practitioners. Everyone is in a great flow–state right now with both the expectations and work. It is so rewarding to watch the growth take place all around. That said, everyone is looking forward to the week of vacation as well!
